Da Nang Strengthens Export Competitiveness Through Logistics Infrastructure Development
Da Nang is rapidly positioning itself as a strategic logistics hub in Central Vietnam. By investing heavily in infrastructure and leveraging its coastal access, the city aims to boost the competitiveness of its export industries, deepen integration with supply chains, and attract greater foreign and domestic investment.
As a key industrial and maritime gateway for the Central region, Da Nang is more than an export point—it’s evolving into a transshipment and logistics node for the wider Mekong subregion. Local authorities and logistics firms envision a future where Da Nang does not merely handle goods passing through, but actively drives value addition, processing, and trade integration.
With city expansion and administrative changes, Da Nang now connects with adjacent districts and industrial zones in Quang Nam, enabling alignment of urban planning, transportation, and industrial logistics strategy.
Da Nang’s proximity to deep-water ports and its strategic position along major sea routes make it ideal for handling large vessels and facilitating international trade. The city is unlocking this potential through improved port access, more frequent container services, and enhanced export routes.
To support logistics efficiency, Da Nang is deploying better road, rail, and intermodal connections. Proposed expansions include key national highways (14E, 14D), port link roads, inland corridors toward the Central Highlands, Laos, and Cambodia, and rail extensions.
These efforts aim to reduce transportation costs, shorten freight delivery time, and improve reliability for exporters.
Approval for Free Trade Zones (FTZs) and bonded areas in Da Nang is creating favorable conditions for processing, incentive management, and trade facilitation. For example, the Tam Hoa / Tam Tien FTZ near harbor zones is planned to host logistics centers, bonded warehouses, and export processing hubs.
While Da Nang benefits from its geographic advantages, several challenges remain:
Higher logistics costs compared to northern and southern hubs due to incomplete infrastructure and weaker connectivity.
Fragmented transport networks and lack of fully integrated multimodal systems.
Insufficient scale in warehouses and logistics centers, particularly in bonded and FTZ services.
Complex administrative procedures and regulatory gaps that slow trade facilitation.
Local stakeholders propose addressing these by prioritizing synchronized infrastructure investment, simplifying approvals for port and logistics projects, scaling up bonded logistics zones, and accelerating land and legal reforms.
Cost and time reductions for exporters, giving them stronger margins and competitiveness.
Greater attractiveness for investment in high value manufacturing, processing, and advanced logistics.
Stronger regional integration, connecting Da Nang to supply chains in Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Korea, Europe, and the U.S.
Elevated export role: With such growth, Da Nang could boost its share of national exports and become a key export hub in Central Vietnam.
